HOBI Award - Best Out Of State Custom Home

This beautiful custom designed contemporary home sits on a two-acre lot with stunning water views, featuring an open floor plan with an exterior that is in harmony with the natural environment surrounding the home. The home includes the use of natural materials such as stone and timber that it would blend in with the environment, not overwhelm its serene waterfront setting.

The narrowness of the site meant that the house would need to be deeper than wide. With all the major living spaces calling for water views, the solution was to create two central “courtyards” for light and air which bridge the living spaces with the other functional spaces of the home. One courtyard is an open stair in the light filled atrium and the other is an internal Japanese garden shared by the kitchen and the master suite.

The architect created four 38 foot stone columns, each 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep, to create a symmetrical rhythm internally and provide an internal link with the exterior stone facing. While these columns bring natural elements into the home, the extensive use of glass creates a visual link to the outdoors.

A wide reception foyer with a flanking guest wing leads the visitor across an open bridge. This bridge then leads to the living room, music room, one of two master suites, and the dining and kitchen areas. The bridge is open on one side to its central staircase, one of the home’s main architectural features.  This open staircase connects all three levels and allows views of all floors simultaneously. The staircase/atrium is enclosed in glass both above and to one side, allowing views of the surrounding gardens and Long Island Sound. In addition, the glass atrium provides light and air to flow to the gym on the lower level of the home.

The second floor has the second master suite and well as additional bedrooms, bathrooms with tile designs that recall the sea outside, an open family room by the staircase landing, as well as a second floor laundry room and balconies.  The lowest level contains a glassed in media room which allows light from the central staircase and atrium to pass through. The media room is adjacent to the gym which benefits from this ambient light source as well. A matching pool house, with an engaged outdoor fireplace recalls the stone columns from the interior of the home and visually unites the exterior spaces with the interior of the home.
